Wonder by R.J. Palacio, it’s an emotional novel that has become a compulsory high school reading and it has been number 1 for over a year on the children book list in USA.
It’s the story of Auggie, a boy with a deformed face, who everyone stares at. He lives in a close, tight and loving family, and his mother was his teacher for his early years. Now though, he has to cope for the first time, at the age of 12, with entry to high school. If he was a normal boy it wouldn’t be strange, but if you are deformed there are consequences.
In this book every chapter is narrated by a different character: August himself (Auggie), his sister (Via), Jacq, a friend that hides in front of his friends that August is a good mate and with good sense of humour. The sister’s friend, the sister’s boyfriend... Everyone tells how are their lifes around Auggie are affected.
Each contribution makes us examine ourselves, it makes us think about ourselves, our behaviour, our friendships and what it all means to be kind.
Besides, it is a book full of references. All the sections of the book are open with a quotation; or the lyrics of a song or some book.
Wonder has got feeling, and is such an easy read that it makes you want to recommend it to everyone.
